Spring Runner Part 2

I've added the two pieces of sashing between the blocks.
I really like to mark my rows because I have a tendency to turn them around once I walk from the layout  wall to the sewing machine.  I use my frixon pen because all I have to do is hit it with the iron and the writing is gone. Take a measurement through the center of the row and...
sub cut the sashing that will go between the rows 2" wide.
Pin sashing in place and sew.
Alright that's done and I have connected each row.
Another measurement through the center will give me the length to cut the side borders.
I've pinned this one with the border fabric on the bottom.  I want to make sure that I catch those pressed seams in the correct direction.  Use a stiletto to feed the block seams under your pressure foot.

Press seams open and another measurement through the center will give me my top and bottom lengths.
Before I cut these I've still got to work out the applique' and two paper pieced blocks that I want to include.  I'm off to sketch a bit more before I continue with this.  Have a peace filled week,  Laural

Anatomy of a New Design

Inspiration for a new pattern comes from many sources.  When I was putting out the Easter decorations, quilts being the prominent amongst them, I was aware that I don't have a spring table runner.  So I'm going to begin working on that soon to be runner pattern.  It begins with a sketch.
I didn't say it was a good sketch.  I jot down the "idea" at least as I see it.  That in no ways means it will turn out this way.  For this runner I want to take a charm pack...
this spring colored one will due.  Moda Athill Range from Cabbages and Roses, has lovely pastels.  It is missing a green and yellow so I might have to pull from the stash to add a bit of that.
I work out the piecing part of the pattern first as that often dictates how large an area I will use for any applique' or embroidery.  I want to sub cut these charm squares into 1 1/2" x WOF.
So I did that and now I will separate them into color ways.  I want to pair three of them and those will become my blocks.
 Strip piece the sets.
Take a measurement and I can already see that "Houston we have a problem".  I want these blocks wider than this so that I don't have a lot of waste when I square them up.
Good thing there are extra strips laying about and now I'll add a fourth.  I keep paper and pen next to my sewing station so that I can create notes on the pattern as I sew/cut/change and create.
The squares ended up being 4 1/4" and my plan is to sash with cream and rotate each block.  I like to lay everything out so I can judge the width of the sashing.
I'm going with 2 inches.   That's it for today as I have more sub cutting to do.  Stay tuned as I continue to work on the "Spring Time Runner" pattern.

The Cover

Good Morning,  I am so honored to share with you my cover for the Special First Anniversary Issue of Primitive Quilts magazine!
Ta Dah!  This quilt is an original design that I submitted nearly a year ago.  It is called "Precious Threads" and incorporates piecing, hand embroidery and wool applique'.  I hope you like it and if you do make sure to let the magazine know, you can follow the link to their page by clicking on the magazine cover to the left.

What's Hangin and Other Such

I know we have passed St. Patricks Day and we are headed into Easter but before March slips away I wanted to share with you the lovely surprises we received from our teacher at the Fat Quarter's class with Julie Isa.   At each table, and frankly when does she sleep, was a cake plate with themed cupcakes and a goody bag.
Outside the pouring rain did nothing to dampen our class time fun and made the flowers bloom brightly.
While hanging my Easter quilts I still enjoy seeing the Rabbits Prefer Chocolate from Bunny Hill Designs which I made almost 6 years ago now.
I remember enjoying the hunt of tracking down each of those fabrics which Anne Sutton had used in the original. Now I'm learning to pull from my stash and be happy with "close enough".
It's nice to see that this quilt isn't out dated yet.
I hadn't learned the starch applique' method yet when I made "Rabbits", nope still doing needle turn.
Happy Spring everyone and please have a peace filled week.

Honey Q

At first I couldn't figure out why when I have gone almost two months without any quilts to do that in the last two weeks it seems everybody has been over to drop off quilts.  These are just a few that I have finished this week.
Lorie's Hexagon quilt
I did an all over swirl pattern.
Coop sample Bunny Runner.
Due ASAP this breast cancer opportunity quilt.
Each block machine embroidery.
Ashley's birthday quilt due right away.

Blue bird mini quilt, if I had time I'd make one for myself.
Another Easter quilt!
I guess I've figured out what the big rush is all about.  Easter's on its way.   Also, if I could just say it was very very nice to receive all the prayers, love and support through these past difficult days.  Thank you friends.  Laural

An Anniversary

They say a pictures worth a thousand words.  This photo was taken at our son's junior high graduation.  We looked like any other family, waiting in the hot summer sun to catch a glimpse of your beautiful boy walking down the isle to get his diploma.
What I see when I look at the picture is my husband Ron two weeks post op.  They had de bulked the brain tumor and he was due to start the two hour round trip journey every day for 6 weeks to get radiation and then chemo.  We were a family just coming to grips with the news we had been given.
Two hours after this photo was taken I made my first  911 call after Ron collapsed with shortness of breath and chest pains.  Ambulances and firefighters where swarming our home and Ron was taken to the nearest hospital.   I drove away and glimpsed my son staring after us with tears running down his face.  There would be no graduation celebration for this family on that day.   Ron survived this episode but it became our lives for the next 22 months.
Tomorrow March 22nd will be 2 years since I lost my husband.  The grief is not as raw as year one, but you are expected to be "over it" by now.  I am expected to be "moving on".  Very few remember this date or understand why I'm quiet, sensitive and moody.  I've learned to hide my grief away in the privacy of my home, behind a locked door.
   I can't write about quilting today, I'm grieving, I'm remembering and I'm missing...him.

Tutorial-Half Square Triangle Paper

I'd like to share with you a tutorial on making half square triangles.  For this example you will see me cut my paper apart as I needed scrappy half squares and didn't want to make more than four at a time.  Select your triangle paper on a roll according to the FINISHED size you need for your squares.  In this instance 2" finished.
Select TWO fabrics and place them right sides together.
Pin the paper in place to prevent shifting while you sew.
Reduce your stitch length to inch and a half or there about.
The paper is pre printed with arrows, dashes and solid lines.  The solid lines are those which you will cut on.  The dash lines are the ones you will stitch on and the arrows give you the direction in which to sew. The arrows are more important if you are sewing a long strip of these as you can zoom right through them.  I changed my pressure foot to one which has an arrow to help guide me on those dash lines.
This is the view from the back side, before cutting the squares apart.
You will cut on every solid line.  I took off the outside lines first.  Then cut through the center giving me two squares.  Your last cut will be on the diagonal.
Pull off the paper being careful not to open up the seam.  Press to set seam.  Press to the dark as you open up your block.
Check to see if your block is squared up, and trim off any access.  I did this for the first couple till I figured out that if the square measured 2 7/8" they were perfectly square and I didn't have to do this step just trim off the little seam points.
I'm not sure I would use this method again unless I had many many of the same half squares to do.  Of course we all know patterns that call for a half square triangle border and we just skip them because that seems so daunting.  This would definitely make me reconsider one of those patterns.

Girls Gather

Last night was the monthly sup n sew.  It was my turn at the main meal and being so close to St. Patty's day I made Irish Stew.  I gathered my ingredients and found a recipe off of Pinterest.
Quick seared the chuck roast, in batches.
Being a fan of the crock pot I tossed it all in there with a nice rue and 6 hours later "patty stew" is ready to eat.  Smells and looks delicious.
Now I apologize for not having sewing photos to share, as I've said before we do a lot more supping than sewing.  In fact this time we had a flea market table and everyone brought notions, patterns and fabric to exchange.  Quite fun and I went home with a new lamp!  Speaking of going home with something...once again I found a cupcake treasure in my bag (giver unknown) from my secret pal.
It's an adorable cupcake night light!  Where are they finding these things?
Thanks girls such a fun night as always.  PS if you'd like the stew recipe it will be posted on my blog recipe page this weekend.
